One year after ?friendly fire? drone attack, mother shares grief for Marine son on blog

My front-page article in the Houston Chronicle today revisited the tragic deaths of two Houston-based reservists who became the first-ever U.S. troops to be killed by a drone one year ago. Staff Sgt. Jeremy Smith, 26, and Navy corpsman Benjamin Rast, 23, died April 6, 2011 when a Predator crew mistakenly fired a Hellfire missile at them in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. Unanswered questions about the friendly fire incident persist despite a Pentagon investigation that absolved everyone involved of negligence and dereliction of duties.
